Café Culture 2018/19
Tuesday 4 December 2018 | 18:00pm – 20:00pm
Brunswick Methodist Church | Newcastle Upon Tyne
This talk by Salome Voegelin forms part of the caféphilosophique strand of the Café Culture 2018/19 programme. Café Culture welcomes people to free café-style, thoughtful public discussions on culture, politics, philosophy and science. Open to all, there is no need to book (unless otherwise stated), no prior knowledge is needed, just a like-minded desire for convivial and lively banter in an inclusive, welcoming setting.
Sonic Materialism: How to be a thing according to sound
This discussion will consider ideas of new materialism through a sonic sensibility and participation. Salomé Voegelin will discuss and perform the possibility of a sonic exploration of materiality and reality, engaging the material reality of things and subjects through the speculation of a non anthropocentric perception (without seeing the world through the prejudices of human desire) in the invisible sphere of sound. The aim is to listen to whether sound offers us a ‘view’ of the unthought world, without impinging on its reality through the shape of our ears.
