Sonic Waves: Music and Sound Beyond Borders

Recently completed CRiSAP PhD researcher Kevin Logan will present a performance paper about ‘Sonic Pedagogy’ at the Sonic Waves symposium, organised by Music and Sonic Studies Manchester (MASSmcr), based at Manchester Metropolitan University. Established in 2018, MASSmcr conducts innovative research into music and sonic phenomena.

With a Keynote by Dr Linda O’Keeffe (Edinburgh School of Art), this symposium brings together academics, researchers, practitioners, students and community organisations interested in exploring how music, sound and the sonic can be used to transcend boundaries and move beyond borders. At a time of global uncertainties from climate change and conflict zones, to national and international political upheaval, it aims to question if music and the sonic can narrate and negate these changes and shift understanding of core and peripheral preoccupations.

This daylong event will be followed by MASS Assembly, a special evening performance and event that explores the ideas of the day through practice and performance in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. The programme brings together music and sonics, incorporating a range of styles and improvisation in The Castle Hotel on Oldham Street.
