Visiting Researcher
Summer 2022
Natalia Kowalska-Elkader, Ph.D., is a radio researcher at the University of Lodz, Poland.
'I am interested in radio genology, experimental broadcasts, and the use of documentaries in sound art. My doctoral thesis was focused on artistic radio documentary and its history. I have published essays exploring features and experimental radio pieces. I am also an author of two books: Forma i treść. Polski i zagraniczy feature radiowy oraz jeo odmiany gatunkowe (Form and Content. Polish And Foreign Feature and Its Subgenres, 2019) and Historie eksperymentalne. Szkice o gatunkach radia artystycznego (Experimental Stories. Genres of Artistic Radio, 2020).'
Research
During the research visit Natalia will be comparing British and Polish methodologies and approaches to sound studies. The aim of her activities is the genealogical and structural development of word-based forms of sound art, defining the relationship between radio genres and contemporary audio art. She will analyse both documentary and fictional verbal-narrative representations of sound art in terms of the use of primary and secondary spoken words, sound quotations, and sound invariants.
Natalia will be working with Professor Cathy Lane during her visit.
