Build your own diy radio with Shortwave Collective

15th September 2022 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Brigitte and Lisa making and listening to radios, outdoors at a table full of equipment
15th Sept 2022, 11:00am Crosby Library

Members of the international feminist group, Shortwave Collective, are running a workshop on how to build a DIY radio. The session is suitable for all ages and abilities and they will share their radio recipes, inviting participants to search for radio transmissions and experience the radio spectrum in new and surprising ways. The workshop will be the basis for a collaborative listening experiment, with participants hooking up their radios in special sites around Crosby. Read more on the At the Library website

The event is part of the ‘Listening in…’ project ‘which uses internet radio to make a space for the act of eavesdropping — but not in the conventional sense of online snooping or surveillance. Instead, it asks how our libraries, often associated with quietness, can act as platforms from which things can be invited to make noise, and which others can overhear. ‘Listening in…’ tries to extend our ears into places they cannot get to, to listen to voices that we might not ordinarily hear, unburdened by preconceptions around how things look.’

Shortwave Collective is an international, feminist artist group established in May 2020, interested in the creative use of radio. They meet regularly to discuss feminist approaches to amatuer radio and the radio spectrum as artistic material, sharing resources, considering DIY approaches and inclusive structures. Members: Alyssa Moxley, Georgia Muenster, Brigitte Hart, Kate Donovan, Maria Papadomanolaki, Sally A. Applin, Lisa Hall, Sasha Engelmann, Franchesca Casauay and Hannah Kemp-Welch
