Wed, March 23, 2022
6:00 PM – 7:00 PM GMT
Artist talk by Mark Peter Wright, an artist-researcher working at the intersection of sound arts, experimental pedagogy and critical theory
Following the Flow / Mark Peter Wright
Taking the word “footprint” as its point of departure, this talk will perform practical and theoretical thought experiments to consider the ecological impacts of walking and listening. I will follow the multi-scalar imprints of field recording and trace the power and poetics of sonic fieldwork, with specific reference to the geopolitical networks that enmesh microphones. The presentation will blend sound and image with fieldnotes and spoken word.
Mark Peter Wright is an artist-researcher working at the intersection of sound arts, experimental pedagogy and critical theory. His practice investigates relations between humans and animals, geographies and technologies, observers and subjects. Working between the field and lab, site and gallery, he is committed to amplifying forms of power and poetics within the creative use of sound and documentary media. Wright has exhibited artworks internationally with galleries and institutes and published across numerous peer reviewed journal platforms. His forthcoming monograph is titled Listening After Nature [Bloomsbury 2022].
A Zoom link will be sent to all registered participants shortly before the talk.
Walking Festival of Sound is a transdisciplinary event exploring the role of walking through and listening to our everyday surroundings. It combines a number of free and public events including walking performances, walking seminars and listening sessions, all taking place in diverse public spaces and online. Walking Festival of Sound facilitates a meeting point for the international network of practitioners and researchers interested in sound and walking. Through diverse events we explore how walking and listening practices can augment and challenge the way we perceive, navigate through, and care for our shared environments. In 2019 the festival took place in two cities, Stockholm, Sweden and Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. In April 2021, the festival moved to Krakow and Edinburgh. In 2022, WFoS takes place in multiple places to be announced soon.
